I picked my Mustang up from getting a new Maaco paint job on September 20, 2002. The Maaco job isn't perfect, but this time I wasn't expecting perfection. In general, they did a much better prep job including lots of sanding to get the remnants of the Schieb paint off. They also did a much better job of masking off trim. Yes, they oversprayed a bit around the hood and door jambs, but this time I expected such and wasn't ticked off. They did a good job of laying down the paint, but I know the current paintjob is only a stopgap measure until I can afford a full, bare metal, interior-stripped and drivetrain-pulled expensive repaint. Hopefully that'll happen before I'm 30, and also hopefully this paint will last until then. :)
I haven't changed hardly anything below this paragraph since I first made this page, so you can skip to the "watching Earl's paint peel" page or the completely new "new Maaco paint job" page.
I thought my oxidized paint was bad looking. I wanted a paint
job. I went to Earl "Schmuck", home of the $199 paint special. I shouldn't
have. Here are examples of the quality of Earl Schmuck paint jobs:
Overspray into the engine compartment.
More overspray into the engine compartment. Yes, I know it's grimy.
Overspray onto the windshield and chrome trim (!). Notice my total lack of
a passenger side rearview mirror. Apparently optional for that year. :0)
10.08.02 Update: Anyone want to buy a passenger
side mirror delete kit? :)
Overspray onto the window under the driver's rearview mirror. They also painted
the black mirror housing, the black front grille, and the black cowl grille.
I consider myself very lucky they didn't paint the chrome trim around the
windows.
Overspray on the door sill. Well, I guess $199 doesn't go as far as it used
to, and you do get what you pay for. :0(
So, that's the quality of the work at Earl Schmuck. What about the actual
paint quality, you may ask? Right this way...
